8 Best Short Bike Rides from Manali: Distances, Routes & Local Tips (2026)
By the BRB Expeditions team — your local bike rental partner in Manali

Most travellers come to Manali dreaming of Ladakh. But here is a secret the locals know: some of the best riding in Himachal starts within an hour of Mall Road. You do not need a ten-day expedition to feel the mountains — just a well-maintained bike, a free morning, and one of the routes below.

At BRB Expeditions, we rent bikes to riders every single day, and these are the eight rides we recommend most often — from a relaxed 15-minute ride to hot springs, all the way to a full-day run over the Rohtang Pass. For each one, you will find the distance, riding time, road conditions, and the small local tips that make the difference.

1. Vashisht & Jogini Waterfall — The Perfect Warm-Up Ride
Distance:
3–4 km from Manali

Ride time: 15 minutes

Best season: All year

If you have just picked up your rental bike and want to get comfortable with it, this is the ride. Vashisht village is famous for its natural hot water springs and old stone temples. Park near the village, take a dip in the springs, and then walk about 1.5 km to Jogini Waterfall — short, refreshing, and a beautiful first taste of the valley.

Local tip: Go early in the morning. The springs are quieter, and the light on the mountains behind Vashisht is perfect for photos

2. Solang Valley — Adventure Playground on Two Wheels

Distance: 14 km from Manali

Ride time: 30–40 minutes

Best season: All year; snow activities in winter

Solang is Manali’s adventure hub — paragliding, zorbing, ropeway rides, and snow activities in winter. The road up is smooth and scenic, winding past pine forests with the Beas River below. It is an easy half-day ride, and you can combine it with Atal Tunnel if you start early.

Local tip: Weekends get crowded by 11 am. Leave Manali by 8:30 am and you will have the road, and the views, mostly to yourself.

3. Naggar Castle — History, Art and Quiet Roads

Distance: About 21 km from Manali

Ride time: 45 minutes

Best season: Open all year; best from March to November

Ride down the left bank of the Beas on the old Naggar road — far quieter than the main highway — to reach the 500-year-old Naggar Castle, once the seat of the Kullu kings. Visit the Nicholas Roerich Art Gallery nearby, have lunch at a café overlooking the valley, and cruise back in the afternoon light.

Local tip: The left-bank road via Jagatsukh is the ride here — apple orchards, small villages, and almost no traffic.

4. Gulaba — Meadows on the Rohtang Road

Distance: About 20 km from Manali

Ride time: 45 minutes

Best season: April to November

Gulaba is the first big viewpoint on the climb towards Rohtang — open meadows, wildflowers in summer, and snow-covered slopes in late spring. It sits below the permit checkpoint, which makes it a great option when you want the Rohtang-road experience without the Rohtang-permit paperwork.

Local tip: Carry a light jacket even in summer. Gulaba is noticeably colder than Manali, and the weather changes quickly.

5. Atal Tunnel & Sissu — Ride Into Lahaul in One Hour

Distance: About 40 km from Manali (25 km to the tunnel, then 9 km through it)

Ride time: 1–1.5 hours

Best season: Most of the year; check conditions in peak winter

Permit: Not required for Indian travellers

This is the ride we recommend most at BRB. The 9-km Atal Tunnel — one of the highest highway tunnels in the world — takes you from green Kullu Valley into the dramatic, high-altitude desert landscape of Lahaul in about ten minutes. On the other side, Sissu village welcomes you with the Chandra River, a tall waterfall visible right from the highway, and mountain views that feel like a different country.

Local tip: Fuel up in Manali before you leave. Keep your headlight on and hold a steady speed inside the tunnel — overtaking is not allowed.

6. Rohtang Pass — The Classic High-Altitude Day Ride

Distance: About 51 km from Manali

Ride time: 2–2.5 hours one way

Best season: Late May to November (opens after snow clearance)

Permit: Required — apply online at rohtangpermits.nic.in (around ₹550 for a tourism permit)

At 3,978 metres, Rohtang is the ride that made Manali famous. Hairpin bends, waterfalls crossing the road, snow walls in early season, and a view from the top that stretches across two valleys. It is a proper high-altitude ride, so start early, ride patiently, and enjoy every switchback.

Important: Permits are limited to a daily quota and the pass is closed to tourists every Tuesday for maintenance. Book your permit online a day or two in advance — or ask our team at BRB Expeditions and we will guide you through the process when you pick up your bike.

7. Kasol & Parvati Valley — The Riverside Ride

Distance: About 75 km from Manali via Kullu and Bhuntar

Ride time: Around 2.5 hours one way

Best season: March to June, and October to November

Turn off the highway at Bhuntar and follow the Parvati River up a valley full of pine forests, hot springs and cafés. Kasol is the base — from there you can visit the Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara, walk to Chalal village, or simply sit by the river with a plate of good food. This one works best as an overnight trip.

Local tip: The Bhuntar–Kasol stretch (about 40 km) is narrow and curvy. Ride relaxed, and avoid riding it after dark. During monsoon (July–September) check road conditions before you go.

8. Jibhi & Jalori Pass — The Quiet Weekend Escape

Distance: 100–115 km from Manali via Kullu, Bhuntar and Aut

Ride time: 3.5–4 hours one way

Best season: March to June, and September to November

Jibhi, in the Banjar Valley, is everything Manali was thirty years ago — wooden houses, deodar forests, trout streams and silence. The riding is superb: after Aut, take the valley road (just before the Aut Tunnel) and climb through Banjar to Jibhi. If you stay the night, ride up to Jalori Pass the next morning for one of the best forest roads in Himachal.

Local tip: Do not miss the left turn before the Aut Tunnel — if you enter the tunnel, you have gone the wrong way. This is a two-day trip; our multi-day rental rates make it easy.

Which Bike Should You Rent for These Rides?

  • Scooter or 125–160cc bike: Perfect for Vashisht, Solang and Naggar — short distances, easy roads, great mileage.

  • Royal Enfield Classic 350 / Bullet: The all-rounder for Gulaba, Sissu and Kasol — comfortable, stable and made for mountain cruising.

  • Himalayan or other adventure bike: The right choice for Sissu, Jibhi and anything beyond the Atal Tunnel — better ground clearance and confident handling on rough patches.

Not sure which one suits you? Tell us your route and riding experience when you book, and the BRB team will match you with the right machine. Every bike in our fleet is serviced and checked before it goes out.

Riding Tips from the BRB Expeditions Team

  • Always wear a helmet — we provide ISI-certified helmets with every rental — and carry your driving licence and a photo ID.

  • Start early. Mountain weather is best before noon, and afternoon traffic near Manali can be heavy in season.

  • Fuel up in Manali. Petrol pumps become rare once you cross the Atal Tunnel or leave the main highway.

  • Layer up. Even in June, Rohtang and Sissu can be 15°C colder than Manali.

  • Respect the mountains: ride slow on blind curves, honk before hairpins, and never ride tired or after drinking.

  • Carry drinking water, sunscreen and a power bank — network coverage is patchy beyond the tunnel.
